Nuwara Eliya boasts the most prestigious tea plantations in Sri Lanka, globally celebrated for producing the world-renowned high-grown Ceylon Tea.

Following a devastating coffee leaf blight in the 1870s, desperate British planters introduced tea cultivation, completely transforming the mountainous landscapes based on the early experiments of James Taylor. The high altitude (approx. 1,868 m), combined with a cool misty climate and frequent rainfall, creates the perfect terroir for producing the "Champagne of Tea"—which yields a light, bright liquor with exquisite fragrance and delicate, floral notes entirely unlike lowland teas.

This legacy is anchored by historic plantations like the Pedro Tea Estate, established in 1885, and the sweeping Mackwoods (Damro) Labookellie Estate. Today, walking through these emerald carpets is an unforgettable experience. Pluckers in vibrant sarees expertly hand-pick the 'two leaves and a bud' that create these premium brews. Visitors can witness the intricate multi-stage process of withering, rolling, oxidization, and firing, and tour original 19th-century machinery still proudly operating within Pedro's famous "Fairyland" factory.
