Sitting at an elevation of nearly 1,900 meters above sea level, Nuwara Eliya possesses a unique subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cfb), radically different from the hot and humid coastal plains of Sri Lanka.
The weather is famously unpredictable but consistently mild, maintaining an average annual temperature around 16°C (61°F). Mornings often begin with a crisp chill—particularly between December and February, when night temperatures frequently drop to 8°C or lower, and white ground frost paints the tea hills—accompanied by a thick blanket of morning mist. By midday, bright sunshine usually pierces the clouds, warming the lush valleys to a very comfortable 20°C–23°C.
While the region is fed by frequent misty drizzle year-round, the best time to visit is from February to April. These specific months offer the lowest historical rainfall and clearest azure skies, making it the ultimate sanctuary for hiking Horton Plains, exploring botanical gardens, and partaking in the festive "April Season" before the heavy May monsoons arrive.
